After becoming a certified public accountant and completing his two years of National Service on the lower deck of a Royal Navy minesweeper, Hodges He got a job on British television as a teleprompter operator. Mike Hodges was able to easily watch the studios run and gave him time to start writing scripts. One of them was Some Will Cry Murder, written for ABC’s Armchair Theater series. Though he never did, he served long enough to get a writing commission so he could quit the job as a technician.

After that, he quickly progressed to producer/director status, with series like Sunday Break for ABC Television, Mundo en Acción for Granada Television. He wrote, directed and produced two filmed thrillers, Suspect (1969) and Rumor (1970), again for Thames Television. These two films also led to Hodges being asked to write and direct Get Carter (1971), which was one of the best British gangster films of all time.
