Adriana Barraza, born March 5, 1956, is a Mexican actress, acting teacher, and director. In 1999, director Alejandro González Iñárritu cast her as the mother of Gael García Bernal’s character in Amores Perros, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Barraza is known in Mexico as Master Barraza because of her partnership with Mexican director Sergio Jiménez, known as El Profe.

They created the Actors Workshop in Mexico City, teaching and developing their own version of the Actor Method. Barraza began his career directing episodes of soap operas, actors whom he would also train. In the 1990s he decided to get in front of the camera. She currently operates her own acting school located in Miami, Florida, titled Adriana Barraza’s Black Box. The school’s instructors include her husband Arnaldo and her daughter Carolina.

In 2006 she collaborated with Iñárritu in Babel, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She became pregnant at the age of 18 with her daughter, actress Carolina Valsagna b. 1975. The father of her daughter is unknown, since he abandoned her. Her first husband was Carlos Valsagna, whom she married in 1978, who adopted her daughter and named her after her.

Her second husband is Arnaldo Pipke. Barraza studied acting at the School of Fine Arts of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua. Barraza appeared in the films Henry Poole Is Here, Drag Me to Hell, and Soon Darkness. In 2011, Barraza’s latest films included From Prada to Nada and Thor (in which she cut her role). She had a recurring role as Guadalupe Elizalde on the FX television series The Strain. In 2014, she starred in the movie Cake alongside Jennifer Aniston.
